lotus09: I swear to god, there is going to come a day when I reach in someone ‘s driver window and smash their bitchass face into their steering wheel. Don’t fucking yell at ME when i’m obeying traffic laws on my bicycle. After being cutoff by a pickup truck making a right turn today, I pretty much agree. It’s not right to almost kill people because you’re in a FUCKING HURRY. Argh!

Bikes: toys or transportation?
As I write this, a Congressional conference committee is meeting about the Transportation Bill. It is being suggested that a certain senator from CA is offering to throw bike funding in the forms of Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School “under the bus” to get the bill passed. We are talking about completely - completely - defunding them, not just reducing funding.  So...

Be your own kind of bicyclist
You know, I try not to judge, but damn, too many people are working way too hard at trying to have “cool” or “hipster” bikes. Just get a bike that fits you, a bike you’ll actually freakin’ ride, and ride the damned thing. Nobody cares if it’s fixed, geared, fenders, disc brakes, cable brakes, cruiser, or cargo.  If the bike is visually appealing to you,...

House Attack on Safe Streets Makes Transpo Bill... →
dcycledesign: It’s hard to know what’s more off-base: relegating active transportation to a miscellaneous afterthought, as “additional” seems to imply, or calling them “alternatives” to real transportation – you know, the kind propelled by fossil fuels. please read the article here For all the cycling advocates: Find your representatives, review basic suggested text and add your own...

It must be summertime.
It is as though my bike is telepathically trying to get me to quit my job so that we can go have awesome adventures together. Seriously. If I get fired my boss is going to wonder why I’m smiling.

To wear a helmet or not?
I grew up biking all over and never wore a helmet. Biked all around southern Italy when stationed there, without a helmet. Got back to the States - helmet. Then I read an article in Bicycle Times (great mag, by the by) and it got me wondering - why a helmet? Motorists don’t wear them. Pedestrians don’t wear them. Bicyclists in most of Europe don’t wear them. And as the article...

A new bike is like a new girlfriend
So, instead of building one up from scratch as I’ve done previously, I bought a new touring bike yesterday. Will use it for commuting, errands, etc. as well as some short (and not-so-short?) touring. It’s not a fixie. It’s not carbon or aluminum. It will soon have lights, rack, panniers on it - as soon as I move them from my old bike. Yep, pretty uncool. Very un-hipster. But...
